The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Episode 1 Review and Discussion

I don't think you guys understood the fact that the loan scene was more about racial undertones. Black people in America historically have been denied loans from bank institutions as a form of systemic racism. It's used as a way to prevent black people from being home owners in predominantly white areas, as well as being business owners so that they can stay below the poverty line and not be able to accumulate generational wealth. This is what that scene was trying to accentuate, and also the fact that no matter where you are as a black person in America - even if you're an avenger, that you will face racism. Unfortunately, not even the infinity stones were able to snap that away.

OK this might be a stretch but... Snap happens ... 5 years past... blip...everyone is back. In 5 years time everyone was busy trying to get things back to "normal". When the blip happened, people who came back, depending on where they were (plane, boat, car) reappear and most likely died. So not everyone returned. In those 5 years did half the population spend all that excess money that was left over from the snap? Why can't Sam get a loan.... I don't buy it.

Yeaaaah I think you guys missed the racial implications of that loan scene too. The showrunner and most of the writers are black so there’s gonna be a theme in this show. Then telling sam he did the right thing in handing in the shield and then giving it to a white man bc he “symbolizes America” more was also very intentional

Banks would absolutely deny him a loan. You guys underestimate just how heartless lending institutions really are.

I don't think *flawed* is the right term for Scarlett Witch or Bucky. Damaged would be better. To me, flawed is something you could fix, while damaged means it was done to them and they now have to respond. Think of it like someone losing a limb (but this is the psychological variety). Are they flawed or damaged? I don't think Bucky needs to be redeemed since he wasn't in control. Let's say you're a passenger in a car and the driver runs over someone. You might carry the guilt, but you weren't at fault. But I do understand the guilt. You could almost see Sam being the same, just in the very early stages. He was blipped for 5 years and when he comes back his sister is trying to sell off the family business. He had no control over what happened while he was gone. And now that he's back, he also doesn't think he can uphold the mantle of Captain America and gives up that mantle. Soon after, someone else is given it without earning it. So Sam is early stages of the same long-term guilt. I really like how both programs are digging into the characters and developing them so much more than a movie could do.

I feel so bad for that guy Bucky's been talking to. His son died and he doesn't know why or how, just because Bucky was so good at what he did. I also kinda feel bad for Bucky because he knows what he did to his son, and he doesn't have the mental strength to tell him, and I think partly because of what happened when Tony found out. Tony even was aware of Bucky's Hydra control, and was an Avenger, wasn't that close to his Dad, etc. and he still was going to kill him, so I can't imagine the fallout that will happen between him and Bucky

When people are skydiving from planes they aren't pressurized and that's why you didn't see them getting sucked out of the planes

In the aerial fight scene i think the wind is represented by the shakiness of the camera movements.

I can totally see them not giving a loan to Sam Wilson. Now, a loan for a venture marketed with The Falcon's image attached, they'd go for that in a heartbeat.

I think even Bucky believes that Sam should get the shield. Just like at the conclusion of Endgame, Bucky nodded to Sam as to say "He is giving you the shield and you deserve to have it."

The whole getting "sucked out" of a plane, you are thinking about commercial passenger plans. The thing about getting sucked out is because the plane is internally pressurized higher than the outside air and when the door opens that air pressure evacuates. This was not a pressurized airplane, like cargo planes that can open their tail while flying to drop cargo. The talking in the wind thing, yeah that's questionable. But maybe they were using job on induction communication devices which would not be affected by the wind. I don't know, comic book movies.

What I really wanted to happen was the girl that Bucky goes out on a date with was the Asian kid's brother... And he not understand that right away after he develops feelings for him then she tells him and I don't know how they would make that work in regular conversation but I think that would be just so much more dynamic added to this relationship between him and the old man.

I'm so sick of the constant racism narrative. I'd be just fine if Sam took on the Cap mantle and ran with it, instead I have to be fed another lecture on racism. As if we aren't constantly being inundated with it. I'm exhausted at this point.

HOWEVER I HONESTLY WOULD BE PERFECTLY FINE IF ANOTHER MY GIRLFRIEND WATCHES THE MCU video or even a few lol drop before that...if you do still plan on filming the WandaVision part 3 video.

Bruh the loan thing would absolutely happen,it doesn't matter if he is a hero, look how veterans in real life are treated, plus sam is black so chances of that happening in real life is even more likely.

I think you might be caught up in the hollywood conception of rapid depressurization. If a door size hole opens up on a plane people do not go flying out of the whole regardless of what movies have shown us in the past 30 years.

Comment number 15 of me trying to get you to watch Agents of SHIELD. It gets really good after season one, just make it past season 1 and you’ll love it.

In endgame everyone had a channel to hear Captain America but Falcon being able to talk and be heard while hanging on a plane bothered you.....Remember it is a Comic Book. My guess is that it will take you a while to embrace Sams character and until then you will notice comic tropes more.

Sam was convinced that the shield should go in a museum and that the legacy should be put to rest . He was tricked . They just didn’t feel he was not the right image or he would not follow their agenda

people are failing to consider the way the world and the economy has changed during the 5 years the millions were gone. And to have them ALL show up at once and most needing loans... and then i am denied a loan because I'm NOT an Avenger...

Just an FYI. A plane flying at the height that was (less than 1k feet) would definitely not have its cabin pressurized, so the door getting knocked off and no one getting sucked out is actually quite realistic. Also, even if a pressurized cabin is breached it's not going to suck a bunch of people out. That only happens in movies, space, and movies about space.

The bad guy in the opening scene was the mercenary that Cap fought on the boat in the opening scene of Winter solidier, wasn't it? Also he seemingly survived. Wonder if he'll have a bigger role down the line.

The people weren't sucked out of the jet, because it was below 8000 feet. You wouldn't generally wingsuit out of jet above that height.

Wandavision weighed heavily on the "fantasy" of a comic book story. While FatWS relied on the reality of the world we live in, and that sins don't disappear. They may be set aside for the greater good; buy for some those moments of "peace" for a nation because the moments of despite for those who fought for that peace; and they are stepping deep into their internal "war."

This is looking like it's going to be a great show

hey! listen i know it’s common, but airplanes sucking air out forever is a huge misconception. only as much air as is in the cabin of the plane will be sucked out, pressure wants to become balanced not become a vacuum. when the air pressure in the cabin reaches equilibrium with atmosphere outside the plane... it would just be a little windy. movies were people keep getting sucked out of 747s are the ones that are wrong. the pressure that sucked off the door is just about all the kinetic force the air pressure (suctioning) the plane has to give. 👍

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are both dead so someone else needs to take up the mantle

Hum Holden, I think at that altitude and those planes don't have depressurization problems. In fact, that is actually a film trope, reality is much less extreme so, of anything, this was more accurate.

Having personally never really been invested in Steve, it feels to me like Sam is going to be a more interesting Cap.

As a chaplain who has worked with people in challenging traumatic situations I am loving how the creators/storytellers/actors are exploring the mental health challenges that people cope with after traumatic life events.

HOLDEN im a physics major and there is only suction out of a plain for a few moments after the door is open bc the the plane equalizes pressure with the outside and the suction stops

My biggest nitpick about this so far is the fact that Falcon would even have to go to a bank to get a loan. He's an Avenger. I feel the government or at least Shield should be taking care of all the Avengers. Not just monetarily. But any healthcare they need for them & their immediate family. They also should never have to pay taxes again. I mean, this is just common sense. So for Falcon to need a loan from a bank, and then to not even get it, is a total slap in the face and complete BS. I'm not a fan of this aspect being part of the MCU. This being said, I thought it was still a really good pilot episode, and I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes!

I'm still peeved that Steve Rogers did not take Bucky back to the past with him at the end of Avengers : Endgame. :/ Especially when Bucky briefly talks about his family, like having 4 sisters, and how he used to be close to his parents. I felt so bad for him. :( Like way to abandon your bro, bro. 😑

Hey so I have about 300 jumps out of a C-130 (which is what that plane was). Even when you first open the door, there is no suction. The C-130 isn't even pressurized in the cargo area. Us US Army Jumpmasters have to stand in the door, hold on to the edges and lean out to do a safety check before shoveling paratroopers out the door.

Can’t agree with you on the loan part seeing that there’s homeless veterans all over the country. People who’ve fought wars that can’t get loans or jobs or anything besides thank you for your service.

The plane isn't pressurized. It's like an old ww2 plane.

I hope when Falcon gets the shield that he doesn't call himself Captain America, it would be cooler if he gave himself a new original name. It won't happen that way, more than likely, but I think that's how I would write it

The show was meh I’m not really expecting anything great especially after WandaVision and I was still on the high of the syndercut so this episode to me wasn’t really good

My theory is about Sam's backstory and growing up with racial intolerance in the South which I think was built upon his Mark Fuhrman reference in Civil War. I remember that being a dark reference in that film and it spoke so much about his character. Also Malcolm Spellman is the showrunner I can't imagine him not talking about that.

You got it a bit wrong on the asian that he killed. He is not friends with the asian and he happens to be have a son that got killed by bucky. Bucky is friends and helping the old man becaus he killed his son. Bucky even has the name of the old man in his book with names

There is no way Sam should have the Shield. It takes his agency away. He is already Falcon. A character in his own right. Winter solider was Steves best friend forever and it’s a redemption tale for him to earn the shield. Bucky was thought to be dead, reprogrammed, forced to commit crimes, and Steve redeemed him, and his public redemption is him earning the shield. Sam always was a hero and always will be a hero, and his hero name is Falcon. When he becomes Cap it is a tokenized move that steals his agency.

Holden...ask vets, (esp vets who are POC) how warmly welcomed they are by corporate America. I think, if there is an inaccuracy in the financial situation, it is that somewhere along the line Pepper would have set up trusts for the entire team. And the Mythbusters proved the suction from a missing plane door is a TROPE.

Oh yeah. I never even considered the whole no air pressure during the plane fight sequence. Kind of ruined for me now.

10:20 The plane in question appears to be a C-130 Hercules with a cruising speed of 336MPH so nowhere near 500MPH. Also, it isn't a passenger liner flying at 30,000 feet. While the C-130 does feature a fully pressurized carbo area, they clearly aren't at an altitude which requires it, otherwise Falcon couldn't breathe. Removal of the door would have quickly depressurized the cargo area. There isn't going to be constant "suction". Your nitpicks are what don't make sense.

I didn’t have a problem with the physics of the opening scene. If the plane wasn’t flying that high (it wasn’t) would the cabin be pressurized? Wouldn’t they purposely be flying low and slow to aid in the wing suit operation they were about to do? I’m no expert but I thought it was great.

The first action Falcon scene was awesome visually but theres a lot of issues upon re-watch. How did the bad guys get their wingsuits on mid-fight with Falcon. You can not fly wingsuits alongside a helicopter. The force from the helicopter blades will push you down. How does Falcon just land in their helicopter and no one notices until the screen pans over to him. In a quick shot they're shooting at Falcon and show unused rounds fall on the ground instead of casings. One of the few realistic things they show is what Holden didn't like. You don't actually get sucked out of an airplane just because the door opens unless you're already really close to the exit like inches. It sucks the air out of the space making it a little harder to breathe but you're not gonna feel a sudden suction like we see in infinity war when Ebony Maw was sucked out of the spaceship. That would happen since space is a vacuum.

When I first saw the old asian man. I thought it was his old friend in the WWII army. I'm a little disappointed it turned out not to be him. Pretty much anytime I see Steve Rogers or Bucky with a very old person I assume its one of the few people from their past to survive this long.

"There's no way that would happen in real life..." I hate to tell you guys, but stuff like that *does* happen in real life. All the time. People who have no income for five years because they were on cancer treatments get denied for loans, regardless of whether their absence of income is understandable or relatable. Held hostage by terrorists for years? Denied. Served in the military at a low rank where your pay over that period was below their threshhold? Denied. Have a reasonable income, but fit "other criteria" that the bank lables as an investment risk, even of that criteria is illegal to apply (such as race)? Denied. In real life, financial institutions are *EXTREMELY* uncaring and shady as a rule. Honestly, Sam and his sister getting rejected for the loan they need to keep their family business alive for those specific reason is the most realistic part of the entire MCU at this point.

Hey Holden, I love your channel. I just want to say in regards to yours and Jeremy's comment about Avengers not being able to get a bank loan, as unrealistic, I feel that point is sadly all too real. Everyday real american heroes are turned down for bank loans, healthcare and mental heath programs due to financial struggles. Just look at the heroes of 9/11 and how difficult it was for many of them to get the medical help they needed. In a way, I think that point was the most real in Falcon and Winter Soldier. The treatment of black soldiers after World Wars matches the treatment of Falcon after the Blip. In the sense ...you served your country and then got fucked over when you return home. And the way the govt guy goes. You made the right choice returnjng the shield meaning they didn't even CONSIDER Sam as a replacement just tells you all you need bout how little they value him. Government contracts but no permanent employment. It's...telling

You have a very naïve world view if you think that bank scene would have played out any different in reality. Like Sam's sister said, "it isn't their job to help us." Banks are businesses, not charities. Plenty of real world heroes can't get a loan right now, let alone in a world that's still reeling from 3.5 billion people reappearing from nowhere. The socio-economic chaos that the would would be in is, if anything, drastically underplayed by the MCU. The thing I do think they are overlooking is that one call to Pepper would completely solve Sam's financial issues.

You guys made me realize something. Sam used to work at the VA helping veterans with their trauma. With that background he might really be the one to help Bucky through his. Like, it'll be fun to see their bickering relationship, but I hope that's not all it is - and so far I get the real feeling this show is going to go deep (with a lot of themes), so I'm looking forward to seeing these two come together to help each other through their struggles to reach their next levels, and how this show will be a commentary on modern "America", particularly through Sam and his real life struggles, and this new guy and whatever he will embody.
